“I would like to make a recommendation for Patti Perlock of Perlock Dog Training as an amazing instructor. Before starting the 15 session course with Patti, my two Cairn terriers (Mac and Dexter) were out of control. They exhibited numerous problem behaviours (i.e. car chasing, jumping on people, possessiveness of toys, excessive pulling on walks etc.) never listened to me and caused a lot of frustration. I had already attended two other obedience schools which only used treats for training, and my dogs were still disobedient.
From the moment Patti did our first consultation and developed a personalized training program for each of my dogs, it gave me hope that Mac and Dexter could improve. Patti was very organized with a 6 week schedule that would teach obedience and target problem behaviours. I really enjoyed that the sessions took place at several locations (at my home, in several parks, at Patti's training center), which made for a realistic training atmosphere. Patti uses a balanced training method that rewards when the dogs behave well, and quickly corrects negative behaviour. This way of training worked very well for my dogs as it helped them to understand what constitutes acceptable behaviour. It also showed them that I am their leader which greatly improved their obedience (they actually started to listen to me!).
I also really appreciated how each session was individualized for my dogs such that we could focus on my goals for each of them. It was a huge advantage to have private lessons and my dogs advanced at a much faster rate. Patti was attentive to the specific needs presented by each Mac and Dexter and adapted the training sessions accordingly. For example, Dexter has a lot of energy so Patti tailored his lessons to be very active and filled with fun exercises. Both boys were very excited every time I told them we were going to see Patti.
Patti is an excellent instructor! She really knows how to read and interpret dog behaviour, and helped me to better communicate with Mac and Dexter. She also built my confidence as a leader and my ability to handle my two boys. Patti always gave clear instructions, answered all of my questions (I had many of them!) and explained the reason for all of the training exercises. I was also impressed about her knowledge of dog nutrition and health. My one dog had a poop eating habit, and Patti suggested his diet might be low in protein. After taking Patti's advice and changing his food, he has completely stopped that habit.
I was initially concerned about the cost of private lessons for two dogs, however, the price was very reasonable given the incredible results I've had. I paid more for group lessons at other obedience schools believe it or not. Having completed the course, Mac and Dexter have been transformed. They are now very responsive to verbal and hand commands, walk very well on a loose leash and no longer exhibit problem behaviours. I have the knowledge and skills to handle my dogs in any situation and am so glad that I did the training course. I would recommend Perlock Dog Training for any dog owner!
